THE NECESSITIES YOU WILL NEED BEFORE YOU BRING YOUR NEW HEDGEHOG HOME


Food: Spikes Ultra Plus with insects
Finding foods for hedgehogs can be challenging at times, Cat foods are good for them and better than most hedgehog foods, but they constantly change formulas to make them better for CATS not HEDGEHOGS!  This food is a good one.  Please when you order use my name SARAH HAND and you can get 10% off.  

Cage: Sterilite 105qt Totes work great. Please give at least 2 square feet of space for their cage, all my cages are more. NO WIRE CAGES THEY CAN HANG AND HURT THEMSELVES

Igloo is a must and wheels are always wonderful.

Bedding: nothing with too much perfume.  Some people use fleece and litter train them I use Flake woodchips from Tractor Supply. I've never litter trained a hedgehog.
Treats: I give mealworms (freeze dried from Walmart from the wild bird section) or holistic cat treats, I do not give any food treats as hedgehogs anoint and dont want you to pick up your new baby and have it be blue from blueberries (I've done this and felt horrible!) So no more people food
I use Water Bottles but do offer bowls of water in their play area, my hedgies will prefer water bottles (I buy mine at Walmart the type that have a ball in them)
Wheels are very good as well to keep hedgies occupied and fit!  Did you know they can run up to 5 miles a night?


​HEAT:  Ceramic Heat Emitter for reptiles,  Hedgehogs need to be at 74 degrees or above. My hedgehogs room ranges from 76 to 78

SNUGGLE SACKS (great bonding tool) a reversible snuggle sack made of flannel and fleece.
​These are great for children so there is no fear of them dropping their new pet. Some use these are beds as well for their cages.

About feeding your hedgehog:
The Hedgehog food I have available Spikes Ultra with ground bugs added is best otherwise cat food high protein low fat.
With companies changing formulas of the foods to better suit cats there are some ingredients that are bad for hedgehogs like peas!
Please do a quick google search if you want to use something else than what I use. I can't always keep up with every brand.  Again always do a quick search as I'm not going to be notified if their formula changes.
